6 Μαρ 2009

Cambodia's long-tailed macaques are stuffed into mesh bags and crammed into the bottom of a boat. RT: Babies clinging to each other in small barren cages await their fate.

Our organization CITIZENS FOR THE RIGHTS OF NATURE AND LIFE expresses its deep sorrow about Cambodia's inhumane traffic in primates for animal research. We urge the government to show compassion for these adorable creatures and exert its power to stop these cruel, barbaric and illegal activities such as trapping, breeding and export of long-tailed macaques.

There are many reasons to do so:

1) The long-tailed macaque is a protected species, categorized as Appendix II in the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

2) There is no reason whatsoever to subject monkeys to torture and death since there are other blood-free, pain-free alternatives available which are also sophisticated and relevant to humans. Researchers now recognize primates do not contract the human strain of AIDS or develop its clinical symptoms. Of 85 HIV/AIDS vaccines tested in animals, every single one failed in 197 human trials. The National Cancer Institute now analyzes treatments for cancer and HIV/AIDS, and tests for drug toxicities, using human cell and tissue panels.

3) The authorities of a country should protect all forms of life and not let them perish like that. All life is precious and should be treated with respect and love.

PLEASE LET LIFE LIVE!

Thank you,

Could you please investigate Cambodia's inhumane traffic in primates for animal research. I ask CITES members to bar CITES related trade with Cambodia, if non-compliance with international animal welfare laws is confirmed.

Investigative findings from British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) show babies forcibly separated from nursing mothers. Monkeys are even captured within a Cambodian nature reserve. Hunters pound on tree trunks with oars to frighten wild monkeys and wrangle them into nets. The animals, caught on film either screaming or frozen in terror, are wrenched by their tails and crammed into bags. They're stowed in boats until sold to a dealer or monkey farm.

The long-tailed macaque is a protected species, categorized as Appendix II
under the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Please look into Cambodia's trapping, breeding and export of these animals for experimentation. Cambodia should protect its indigenous populations of monkeys and not let them desecrate.

Thank you,
